MONTEREY, CA, USA (UroToday) - The Stanford University group, headed by Dr. Craig Comiter, reported on their experience with effects of pudendal nerve stimulation on urodynamics parameters in patients with refractory urinary urgency and frequency.

Subsequent and consequent to the widespread use of sacral neuromodulation has come the application of a similar technology for stimulation of the pudendal nerve. Needle localization of the nerve through Alcock's canal was accomplished via both sensory and motor stimulation with scrotal/vaginal sensation, bulbocavernosus muscle contraction, and action potential measurement via electromyelogram (EMG) at the anal sphincter.

Each of three parameters - including first desire to void, mean cystometric capacity, and volume at first unstable contraction - increased significantly in patients following pudendal nerve stimulation in thiryt of the thirty-six (83%) patients in this cohort.
