MONTEREY, CA, USA (UroToday) - Dr. Ferreira-Mehdizadeh from the Tower Urology Institute for Continence presented her group's retrospective examination of thirty-four patients who underwent artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) placement for treatment of post-prostatectomy incontinence - with specific attention to postoperative voiding dysfunction.

At a mean follow up of 21 months (range 3-82), nine (26%) patients complained of de novo urgency symptoms, all of whom demonstrated detrusor overactivity and seven of whom described significant urge, with mean pad usage of three per day (range 1-5).

Subsequent therapy with anticholinergic pharmacotherapy (and sacral neuromodulation in one) decreased urgency symptoms.

Recognition of the risk of de novo bladder dysfunction following AUS is important in order to provide proper preoperative counseling for our patients.
